A-6A INTRUDER CONFIGURATIONS

As noted in the A-6A decal instructions, there were various airframe changes and improvements made to the A-6A over the course of the Vietnam War. The instructions include a basic illustration to highlight these possible configurations in order to note the applicability of each for a specific aircraft covered by the decals. This page is an attempt to supplement the instructions by showing actual reference photographs of the configurations identified.

Currenlty only the Flak/Armored Curtains section is available, other sections will follow.

Flak/Armored Curtains

Some Intruders had flak/armored curtains installed in the cockpit. A rod was installed on the inside of the canopy where an armored curtain could be drawn up to provide the crew with side protection.  Unfortunately some of the images below are not the best quality but hopefully will provide some insight into their appearance.  These were not installed on all A-6A's and also could still be seen on some aircraft during Desert Storm in 1991.  AOA decal instructions note which aircraft had them installed.

[below] A view of the rod only without the curtain installed (also note the shape of the GRU-5 ejection seat face curtain pull ring which is not D shaped like the later GRU-7)
[below] Contact AOA if this is your photo, unfortunately source has been lost.
[below] The "white" area at the lower edge of the curtain is a reflection on the canopy.
[below] Again, the "white" area at the lower edge of the curtain is a reflection on the canopy.
[below] Note the bat placed between the canopy and the curtain. (VMA-AW-242 were the Batmen)
[below] Contact AOA if this is your photo, unfortunately source has been lost.  This is the best photo to date AOA has come across showing the details of the installed curtain on the rod.  Excellent view showing the zipper at the top of the curtain along the bottom of the rod.
[below] Note the camouflage helmet.
